Pasadena Weekly, CD Review >>
Farka Toure's eponymously titled debut showed him carrying on the legacy of his late father, pioneering Malian bluesman Ali Farka Toure, while embracing electronica. This collection of thoughtful remixes by the likes of Cheb i Sabbah, Eccodek and Captain Planet highlights that affinity for Western beats without sacrificing the rich soul of the originals. Separate remixes by DJ Center and Nickodemus effectively reframe "Sangare" with crosscurrents of funk horns, deep bass and skittering percussion, while Hisboyelroy's Smooth Dub and Karsh Kale take more atmospheric approaches to "Ana" and "Ma Hine Cocore." Farka Toure gives a free concert at California Plaza noon Friday, and plays Temple Bar in Santa Monica that night.
