Slavic Soul Party!
Teknocheck Collision Barbes Records
When drummer Mat Moran leads his nine-piece monster band from a base in Brooklyn, New York, it's like some brass-and-accordion cavalry playing Balkan anthems and Gypsy sounds heading to a village party. In the horns you can hear Moran's jazz background. But there's also some tango and marching band, American gospel and beautiful, off-kilter sounds. The CD title comes from an auto-repair shop in Queens. Rather than a collision of techno and jazz, it's a reinvention of Balkan roots. Track one starts with a heavily accented Slavic voice: "Welcome ladies and gentlemen...welcome and stay alive." And the rest is hip-grinding, soulful Balkan funk. ***1/2
