If you’ve ever linked hands and let it all shake out at a Balkan wedding, you might be prepared for the infectiously celebratory spirit in store at World Trouble in New York today (Friday Jan. 11th). Then again, you might not. After all, the brass band known as Slavic Soul Party! doesn’t just riff Slavic tunes, they roll with New Orleans jazz-gospel-hip hop-Balkan music. Rock on with your transcultural wedding music, Slavic Soul Party! - rock on.

Joining the many members of SSP! at Friday’s showcase is a slew of other toosh-grooving culture-crossers, like Rana Santacruz (Mexico City to Brooklyn, The Cure to Manu Chao, tequila to sailor songs), Ramiro Musotto (Afro-Brazilian electronica, somehow sweetly nostalgic), and Rupa and the April Fishes (perfectly at home in a Bollywood film by Almodovar).

Wish that messing with “authentic” musical, national, and ethnic boundaries was always so much damn fun…
