Pharaoh's Daughter
Everything falls into place for Basya Schechter and her group Pharaoh's Daughter on their latest release, Haran, Schechter's adventuresome music is a combinationof her upbringing as a Hasidic Jew, her world travels, and her discovery of contemporary rock music by groups such as pink floyd and the Doors. As odd as that cobination might seem it works to perfection on the opening track "By Way of Haran," on which the eastern melody is combined with the moodiness of the Doors best wrok of the 60's. Spirtituality is the theme for much of Schechter's songs, drawing upon sources as diverse as medieval Kabalistic poetry and songs of the sabbath known as zimirot, sung in a number of laguages, including some of her own invention. The music is wonderfully diverse, again drawing on a number of diffrent cultures and styles, all powered by a modern sounding band that includes electric guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, with violin, recorder, accordion, oud, saz and percussion adding to the diversity of the sound. Modern Spirtituality music for the 21st century, recommended.
