People frequently like to de scribe music that evokes a feel ing akin to the blues as somehow being the blues. "Fa- do is the Portuguese blues," they'll say. Actually it's not. And it might even have more in common with both lyric content (yearning, pining, craving), and certain aspects of the singing style, of ghazals, music stemming from 14th- century Indian poetry. Ahlu- walia. who has played a considerable role in introducing ghazals to a widespread, non- Indian audience, subtly intro duces elements of fado (and other styles) into her latest, excellent release. And she "does longing" very well, no matter what the musical sources. 06/12/07
