Contemporary Traditional Music

With roots in musics of different traditions of the world, this New Sound aims to extend tentacles across as many cultures as possible.  We'll hear from the latest recording by Yo Yo Ma & the Sild Road Ensemble, "New Impossibilites" which interprets tradition-based and/or newly composed works inspired by the historic splendors of the Silk Road, including works for Persian kemancheh, Chinese pipa, and Japanese shakuhachi.  Possibly, we'll sample Osvaldo Golijov's Night of the Flying HOrses, with a strong hint of Eastern European and Roma mouth organ.  Also on the show are new music ghazals from the Indian-born Canadian Kiran Ahluwalia, who now lives in New York City.  On her latest release, "Wanderlust," Ahluwalia draws on fado, Saharan African blues, and jazz, to name a few.  Plus, there's music from the minimalist quartet Town & Country, who do a tune, "King of Portugal," based on cancao dos reis from an old Folkways 10 inch of Portugese Christmas carols.  That and much more.
