Listen Up: Zap Mama's 'Supermoon' "Supermoon" (Heads Up)
In a universe of superstars Marie Daulne, the Zaire-born lead singer and founder of Zap Mama, refers to herself as a "supermoon," inspired by her inner soul rather than commercialism. "Go Boy," with its piano and kalimba, is innocent like traditional Africa music but blossoms into a mature, modern tale of an immigrant's abandonment of his native culture. "Kwenda," from an African children's game, is funk rooted by call-and-response vocals. Saluting the Pygmies who were instrumental in the Daulne family's escape to Belgium, "Gati" is an effervescent journey. "Supermoon" reflects a group that refuses to allow its creative spirit to wane.
