Saturday brought more hot and humid conditions down on Zilker Park to accompany another day of incredible music, but the throng of concert goers was unfailingly smiling even as they wore out the cardboard fans being given away at the entrance. However, midday heat is hardly even newsworthy at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. What is worth mentioning is that all four of the victims of Friday's concession trailer fire are expected to recover from their injuries. Three of the four have already been released from their respective hospitals (two from Austin Brackenridge and one from Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio), while the fourth is expected to be in treatment for a few more days.

Next up on the Dell stage was Zap Mama, fronted by the charismatic Marie Daulne. Though she stood regally in her flowing coral dress and cascading braids, Daulne's performance was pure energy as she stalked the edge of the stage, urging the crowd to join in on call-and-response choruses and directing her backing singers in impromptu dance steps. Musically, Zap Mama mixes African rhythms with danceclub and hip-hop grooves, but the live show offered a high-energy version of music that is more subdued on recordings.

Unfortunately, Zap Mama was on at the same time as Andrew Bird, so after watching Daulne and company for a couple more songs, I headed off to the AT&T Blue Room stage to see as much of the multi-talented Bird as I could.
