Habib Koite & Bamada
"Sometimes someone cannot know the words, but only hear the music, through the melody they can know the feeling of the song.  Even if they dont understand what I mean, they can understand."  Maili's Habib Koite once told thid reporter about his music. That might be the perfect explanation of his intricately composed songs, which slide through hypnotic, poly-rythmic beats, infectious guitar grooves textured with lush interplay of kora and balafon, talking drum chatter with the occassional call-and- response.  And each album Kiote makes with his band, Bamada, his message and sound become more individually defined and accentuated.  Afriki may be his strongest, most confident work yet.  Many tracks burn with a slow groove that belies his western travels- such as the harmonica that melts into a balafon on "fimani" - but remain clearly homespun.  There is the feeling that Koite has taken an inward turn on a soul searching meditation.  And it is easy to get lost in the rich melody, motion and trance of the music - no matter what he's saying.
