Malian singer and guitarist Habib Koite's music is built on understatement, on subtle shadings, on layers of well-considered detail. Afriki, his first studio recording in six years, is no exception to this approach. In fact, it takes the "discreet is more" route to its pinnacle, a good or a bad thing depending on your tastes. Koite, whose success has largely been in the United States, because of an association with the Putumayo label and Bonnie Raitt, would seem to be targeting a certain market with Afriki, one that tends to take its music with tall decaf lattes. That said, Afriki, in its gentle way, is really quite lovely. 10/23/07 >> go there
