Mali's biggest pop star, as the Rolling Stones once called Habib Koite, is back with Afriki, a mellow, honey-toned album infused with his stylish folksiness. This disc has been six years in the making, since Baro, the acclaimed release that led to huge exposure with Koite playing in packed houses. Between globe-trotting performances, he recorded over several months with his faithful group Bamada. He's got tight acoustic arrangements and great sonic detail using traditional instruments, with the addition of female harmonies. He belnds five hunter's horns (antelope), balafon (wooden xylophone) and a Malian flute called n'goni, and adapts it all to his guitar.
