Around the world with Babylon Circus

By JON TAKIFF

Babylon Circus will bring its rollicking show to the World Cafe Live tonight for its first appearance in Philadelphia. The nine-piece band plays a blend of ska, reggae and punk.

“The band formed in Lyon in 1995,” said singer-guitarist David Baruchel during a phone interview from Paris last week. “But we now all live in different cities around France.”

The band will be touring in support of its album, “Dances of Resistance,” which is being officially released in North America on April 29. The album debuted in Europe in 2004.

“Our earlier albums were just released in France, and ‘Dances of Resistance’ was the first to be released in countries all over Europe,” Baruchel said. “It came out exactly four years ago today.

“Now we’re starting again with that music. It won’t be difficult to play the songs, because we love the challenge of playing for people who don’t know us. It’s like meeting a new girl that you want to get to know better.

“So many American bands are famous in France, but not many French bands are known in America. We want to get new people to come into our world and share our madness with us.

“We are so glad to have a label in America. We are lucky because American music is ruling this world.”

Initially, the band’s main focus was on ska, but the group quickly expanded to rock, funk, swing, Afro-pop, jazz, punk and reggae – with lyrics sung in both French and English. Their music has also been influenced by Django Reinhardt, Balkan Gypsy music, Bob Marley, and French singers such as Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.

“All of us come from different styles of music, including punk, reggae and jazz,” Baruchel said. “From that, we’ve tried to create our own music style. We’re still trying to rule the world with our music.

“For us, it’s not important how many people are in the audience. What is important is reaching the people that are in the audience. So, Philadelphia, join us. Come to hear what you’ve never heard before.”  04/21/08 >> go there
