Walking that unexpected line between '70s science fiction television and salsa music is Bio Ritmo.

This Virginia-based Latin wonder band mixes fabulous Latin piano and rhythms with a good amount of Moog synthesizer-style ambiance to create that nexus point between past and future that isn't so much the present but an unrealized dream of tomorrow.

Starting off with the theme to the "Six Million Dollar Man," Bio Ritmo's "Bionico" recalls those dance albums you could buy for cheap in 1978 with titles like "The Salsoul Orchestra perform the Star Wars Theme and Other Science Fiction Hits." These are players at the top of their game, though -- it's not some totally kitsch exercise.

While some songs do represent lost television theme gems resurrected by the band, other numbers are merely searing salsa, meant to ignite a dance floor and also get your brain going on the musical ideas tossed out. By offering the familiar with the off-the-wall and allowing the result to be neither, Bio Ritmo brings salsa into an energetic modern place, accessible to those who might otherwise never have cast the form a glance while inviting in some purists to check out new ways of approaching it.
