CMJ, CD Review >>
Urged into success by his now living legend dad, El Hadj Djeli Sory Kouyate, balafon master (an instrument similar to the xylophone) and notable lead griot Famoro Dioubate began intricate pieces of music as a youngster in Guinea. Now leading the jazz-infused international troupe Kakande, a band that successfully features traditional balafon melodies backed by flute, cellos and electric guitars alike, he has found a uniquely stunning, textured sound. Whether it's crafting capricious situations like a hippopotamus in love with a human girl ("Mali Sadjo"), or praising the kindness of a stranger in his adopted New York City home ("Mariama Traore"), Dioubate can't help but to be a whimsical troubadour, telling his tales to eager ears across the world.
