From its inception in Haiti, compas music or konpa direk in Creole, is a musical genre with strong influences from Merengue, Cuban, and African beats.  From the boom of its popularity in the 1950's through today, we continue to enjoy and be inspired by Haitian bands that sing and play compas.  When the roots music, or mizik rasin in Creole, launched in the late reggae, rock and funk rhythms.  In the mid 1980's, we saw the rise of Zouk music in the French Caribbean and this jazz inspires, rock and roll, salsa and merengue sound quickly got attention on our island.  The birth of Haitian hip hop, or artists of Haitian descent, became popular among the youth in Haiti and abroad and influenced many successful acts of today.  Not only are Haitinans making music in these unique genres, but are also influencing the sounds jazz, soul and R&B. 10/13/08 >> go there
