About.com, globalFEST 2009 Announced Lineup >>

globalFEST matters. A lot. Sure, it's a fairly small event, by festival standards - a one-night dealie that takes place in a single venue with three stages - but in the world music scene, it's a huge thing. That's because, not accidentally, it takes place during the single largest performing arts presenters conference in North America, and because the folks running it are among the most well-connected and knowledgeable in the world music industry. It's open to the public, so if you happen to be in NYC on January 11, you should definitely make a point of going. More importantly, though, it's somewhat catered to the sorts of folks who make most of the major world music entertainment decisions in the country - the artistic directors of festivals, the folks who run record labels, the programming people at performing arts centers, the booking agents - in short, the world music bigwigs. The festival intentionally books a lineup of artists who are not particularly well-known in the States, so for many of these booking people, it's their first chance to see the artists live, and in many cases, their first chance to hear the artists at all. And because the event is also open to the public, they get to actually gauge audience responses to these artists, and get a sense for how well they'll go over if they hire them. Chances are, unless you're an absolute die-hard world music fiend, you'll only have heard of a few of the artists on the 2009 globalFEST lineup, but give it a couple of years and you'll be familiar with most of them. Yes, it's that important. If you don't want to wait that long, and you want to be the cool kid on the block who is already familiar with these artists when they come to your town, you'd better get your tickets soon, because it always sells out. -- Megan Romer 11/23/08 >> go there
