Bloomington, Indiana, should not spring to mind when you think about music from around the globe, but Rock, Paper, Scissors (rockpaperscissors.biz) has served as a clearinghouse for music from the far corners. A lot of what they deal in simply defies easy categorization and “World Music” always seemed like a lame genre title anyway.

While the release date is not until March we may already have 2009’s best album. Making Love to the Dark Ages is the latest release by Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber. This Greg Tate-led group tears down everything you thought you knew about jazz and rock. Remember the first time your rockandroll head heard John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders? Finally, this is the next step. The title track is Tate’s response to the last eight years of the Republican regime, citing a time of darkness and selfishness that set the stage for Abu Ghraib, and how society’s Internet escapism was our response to atrocities and suffering. Using a technique known as conduction, Tate guides the band via gestures, picking up on themes and improvisations – riffs and melodies are stated, expanded and reinterpreted. This is music thick with joy and promise, but never afraid to face dread and learn from the past.
