2nd annual Haitian benefit Saturday

Some of Tucson's most renowned musicians will come together Saturday for the second annual Benefit Concert for Haiti.

Among those on the bill are members of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, University of Arizona students, pianist Aryo Wicaksono, Haitian saxophonist Gerard Dalencourt and ethnomusicologist/pianist Rebecca Dirksen. The program includes works by Latin American classical composer Alberto Ginastera and tango pieces by Astor Piazzolla.

The evening's highlight will surely come with the buzz-worthy performance by Dalencourt of authentic Haitian voodoo music. Dalencourt has performed extensively in voodoo ceremonies in his native Haiti and uses his performances to reach out to other cultures about Haitian culture.

Dirksen, who organizers said is one of a only a handful of Western scholars to specialize in Haitian music, will explain the significance of voodoo music rituals.

Proceeds from donations will benefit the the Caneille Regional Development Fund, which provides elementary education, student lunches, emergency medical transportation, vocational education seminars and economic development initiatives to Caneille, Haiti.

The fundraiser is organized by TSO cellist Tom Clowe, whose father-in-law mentored the fund's founder, Oliver Zornow, when Zornow undertook the project during high school.

Saturday's concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson, 4831 E. 22nd St. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. 319-0165.
