It's amazing to think that serious Afro-pop is coming out of Chicago. This multiracial quintet, featuring two Ghanaians (former members of acclaimed highlife band Western Diamonds) and three Americans produce a polyrhythmic West African sound that's inundated with lots of highlife and soukous influences plus sprinklings of jazz and Latin rhythms. The biggest surprise on the band's second release is a cover of New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle - what makes this rendition especially endearing is Kofi Cromwell's vocal delivery. Standout tracks are up-tempo opener Nyenko, the stirring title track Odo Sanbra and Nedo Ye Fe. 06/25/09 >> go there
