Tampa Bay Online, CD Review >>
Many are children from some of the world's poorest regions. They're exploring their musical gifts thanks to a philanthropic organization founded by Tejas Patel, nephew of Tampa philanthropists Kiran and Pallavi Patel.
"We thought an innovative way to showcase the fruits of Project Ahimsa would be to create a CD from the children of the program," says Tejas, financial strategist and co-founder of the organization. "They collaborated with professional musicians and DJs, but it's really a showcase for the talents of the kids."
Even with reggae artists Sly & Robbie and Rocky Duwani, and hip-hop performers Michael Franti & Spearhead featured, the album is dominated by children such as Ganesh, a 14-year-old boy who made his living scavenging for rags in Gujarat, India.
He's now a former ragpicker, thanks to Project Ahimsa.
The organization has provided grants to 89 programs around the world, which in turn provide music education to needy students. In the Bay area, Project Ahimsa works through the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Suncoast.
Project Ahimsa was begun in 2001 by Vijay Chattha, Nihal Mehta and Patel.
Kiran and Pallavi Patel eventually took Project Ahimsa under the wing of their Foundation for Global Understanding.
"We're the arts and cultural wing," Tejas Patel says. "We started the project separately. We didn't have the financial wherewithal [the Patel foundation] does, but we used our resources and talents and ability to make an incredible impact."
That can be heard in "Any Day Now," sung by Coco Pelia from Oakland, Calif. She's studying recording arts at Full Sail University in Orlando.
For Pelia, the importance of Project Ahimsa wasn't just financial support.
"It's so emotional being a young person, getting your heart broken, getting disenchanted, being told your dream is impossible," she says. "l was given the space and the safety for me to explore my dream.
"That kind of thinking gave me the sense that I can do anything."
The CD is available for $9.99 on iTunes and GlobalLingoMusic.com. For information on "Global Lingo" and Project Ahimsa, go to www.projectahimsa.org.
