ABAJI/Origine Orients: I don’t know how to explain it but this multi culti middle easterner and his multi instrumental attack make something that sounds like a great lost Serge Gainsborough album. Very intimate almost to the point of claustrophobia, Abaji is a pal, a conspirator and a bit of an outside personality making him into something of a Leonard Cohen singing lyrics in languages the average gringo won’t understand. A little too subversive to sound like vacation music, it’s certainly captivating undercurrent music that will take your by surprise at every turn. If you don’t fall into any of Abaji’s ethnic areas, this is certainly going to be a mind blowing ear opener for the truly left of center looking for something assuredly off the beaten track. 10/05/09
