The Boston Globe, CD Review >>
It's rare, but occasionally an album perfectly embodies the spirit and landscape of where it was recorded. The self-titled solo debut from DePedro, the stage name of Spanish singer-songwriter Jairo Zavala, is such a record. Made with Calexico at the band's Tucson studios, this contemporary Tex-Mex album has a noirish tint, punctuated by brassy horns, Zavala's crisp acoustic guitar work, high-lonesome pedal steel, and lyrics sung in Spanish and English. Highly recommended for fans of DeVotchKa and Calexico. 01/04/10 >> go there
