That Sub Pop Records, the epitome of independant rock, chose to license and release malian n'goni player Bassekou Kouyate's excellent second album is an indication of this country's growing awareness of global sounds.  Of all the African musicians touring internationally, Kouyate is a fine choice-country mate Vieux Farka Toure, who appears on Fula, is released on Six Degrees, while Tinariwen recently won the Uncut Album of the Year award.  Kouyate's griot lineage certainly shaped him into a fine storyteller; he speaks novels on the small stringed lute, while his wife, Amy Sacko, rivals Oomou Sangare on vocals.  While his website states he will soon "rock" America, when listening to the scorching "Muscow," one knows this is no mere jest.  Just as Tinariwen dominated American crowds with a few guitars, one drum, handclaps and polyphonic vocals, Kouyate's diverse intrumentation, not to mention local friends(Bela Fleck is on his upcoming tour), will ensure what he presents will be as stunning and original an experience as this follow-up to his fine debut, Segu Blue. 01/08/10 >> go there
