Maestro from Mali visits Austin

Bassekou Kouyate, a maestro from Mali, is ready to bring his ngoni (a "spike lute" and ancestor of the banjo) to America for all to hear. Kouyate and his band Ngoni Ba use this small stringed instrument to create an amazing arrangement of African rythyms that are anything but ancestral.

Amongst the metropolitan scene in Bamako—Mali's present day capital—Kouyate and his band sit on motorbikes wearing bluejeans with ngonis strapped around their shoulders like electric guitars. Just like the urban scene that surrounds them, Kouyate and Ngoni Ba's latest album, I Speak Fula, brings together the old and the new with a melting pot of blues, rock, contemporary jazz, bluegrass, and a hint of pop while still showing appreciation for the centuries-old sound of Mali.

Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba will be performing at Stubbs
in Austin on their 60-date tour in celebration of their new album.
