Bassekou Kouyate is Malian musician who has jammed with the likes of Bonnie Rait and Bono. Of course Bono, right? Since 2005, Bassekou has led Ngoni Ba, the first-ever group built around four ngonis, a string instrument made of wood or calabash with dried animal (often goat) skin stretched over it like a drum. They are all played by his family members. Bassekou Kouoyate & Ngoni Ba will be in Austin for a show on April 17th at Stubb's (indoor).
I thought it was interesting to see this sort of "World Music" at Stubb's or anywhere but Momo's on Tuesdays. In the spirit of full disclosure, I cannot attend this concert due to my professional commitments with another show that night. Still, I think it is great that Stubb's has Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba playing. I just wanted to let people who may be interested know about the show who are into going to World Music concerts. I even found this BBC video of them "unplugged" on a rooftop in Timbuktu. Stubb's is located at 801 Red River.
Tickets: $17/15. They can be purchased here at Front Gate Tickets.
