Bust a capoeira in your ass: A band formed around capoeira — the Afro-Brazilian martial art that fuses music, sport, and dance — obviously knows something about getting people to move their feet. Formed in Santa Cruz in 1997 by capoeira master Papiba Godinho, SambaDá has seen its popularity grow over the years; last summer it branched out to the band’s inspirational epicenter with performances in Brazil. The group comprises Americans and Brazilians, and its music features a wide range of sounds, including funk, samba, hip-hop, surf, and reggae. And, of course, there’s plenty of dancing.

“The most significant dancer in the band is [vocalist/percussionist] Dandha Da Hora,” guitarist Will Kahn says. “Dandha started dancing with Ilê Aiyê when she was 6 years old. Ilê Aiyê was the first Afro-Brazilian group in Brazil to break the segregation barrier and to perform in Brazil’s infamous Carnival.”

SambaDá’s latest album, Gente!, is being celebrated in a launch party on Saturday, March 13, at the Independent with La Colectiva and DJ Papa Chango. “We are here to make people dance,” Kahn says. “When we get in front of a floorfull of dance moves is when we are at our best." 03/17/10 >> go there
