Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura drops her latest album in the U.S. on April 13, followed by a six-city tour to include Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. She will perform a seventh date in Canada. Released in Portugal last October, 'Leva-me Aos Fados' ('Take Me To A Fado House'/ World Village), is Moura's fourth album in a career that started off in an unorthodox manner for a fadista and which has nonetheless paved the way for Moura to emerge as one of the music's leading contemporary exponents. Moura belongs to a new generation of female fado singers who have exported Portugal's 200-year-old bittersweet musical tradition out of the fado house and onto the world stage. The seventeen-track 'Leva-me Aos Fados' has already gone platinum, with 200,000 units sold in Portugal.

Ironically, Moura got her start in music as a pop-rock singer. She became a fado singer on a lark when a chance encounter with several musicians at a bar led to an invitation to sing a fado, which in turn resulted in her being discovered by Jorge Fernando, the guitarist of the late 'Queen of Fado,' Amália Rodrigues. Moura stands out for her smoky alto and for opening herself to being inspired in the moment. She's known for her habit of choosing songs to perform at the last minute, just as she takes the stage. it's this kind of spontaneity, Moura says, that allows her to really feel and express emotion through music. Moura, who's influenced by a range of artists, including Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye, amongst others, has also retained some of her rock 'n' roll streak. Back in 2007 Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and other members of the Rolling Stones dropped in at the renowned fado house Casa de Linhares to witness Moura perform. She ended up performing with the Stones at one of their concerts and later collaborated on adapted versions of Stones classics 'Brown Sugar' and 'No Expectations' for an album of Stones songs. Moura's extraordinary voice and rising fame even caught the attention of pop icon Prince, who went to hear her perform in Paris and indicated an interest in collaborating with her. Moura will be performing music from her new album during her Stateside concerts.
