Santa Fe New Mexican, Concert preview >>
The mbira, or thumb piano, sometimes used in ceremonies by the Shona people of Zimbabwe to bring forth ancestral spirits, is enclosed in a gourd to create a magnificently resonant sound. When Stella Rambisai Chiweshe was a young child in Zimbabwe, it wasn't accepted for girls to play the mbira, so she secretly tried to teach herself. Fortunately, her uncle soon heard of her efforts and gave her lessons. Now Chiweshe brings her vocal and instrumental music to northern New Mexico for three performances.
She plays at the Railyard Performance Space (982-8309) at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15; the Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque (505-268-0044) at 7:30 p.m. Sunday Feb.16; and the Kachina Lodge, Taos (505-758-2275) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.19. All performances are $20. 02/14/03
