Khaira Arby, Vieux Farka Toure and other Malian musicians release new track calling for peace in Mali in the midst of a coup d’etat: Violence has erupted in Mali. A northern rebellion is now coupled with a coup d’etat in the south and has brought about the rapid fall of the government in this strongly democratic West African country. Thousands of refugees have fled the country seeking safety in the open countryside or in refugee camps in neighboring countries. Many more have stayed in their homes to wait for the situation to be resolved. This humanitarian crisis is largely unknown and woefully underfunded because of NGO reluctance to move into what is effectively a warzone. By chance, Khaira Arby was at work in a Bamako recording studio when the news broke that a coup was in progress, in the streets right outside the door. No stranger to socio-political issues, Khaira Arby was eager to work on a new song to talk about what was going on. Together with two other internationally recognized Malian music stars, Vieux Farka Toure and Bassekou Kouyate ( as well as the studio team, the Mali Allstars, put together by producer Joe Conte), this new plea for peace was born. “Le Monde Pour La Paix” http://soundcloud.com/maliblues/le-monde-pour-la-paix www.rockpaperscissors.biz/go/khairaarby/ Khaira Arby is scheduled to tour North America beginning April 26th in Dallas, Texas. Everyone is anxious about her ability to get out of the country, and Khaira is worried about leaving her family during these critical times, if the situation there is not clarified. When she arrives in the U.S., she will continue to call for a peaceful resolution to all conflicts around the world. She is keenly aware of the long-term suffering created by war falls most heavily on the shoulders of women. A strong advocate for women’s rights and for respect for women, she will continue to put this issue front and center. Timbuktu is a cosmopolitan city where people from all places meet. Khaira Arby hopes that the future holds a continued opening of the city to tourism, investment, and culture.
