Video Selecter: Khaira Arby
Malian Diva Caught Live In NYC
by Tom Pryor
Each week Nat Geo Music scours the far reaches of the internet to bring you the coolest new music videos from around the globe.
This week we've got a special treat, live footage of Malian songbird Khaira Arby, shot at New York's Bowery Poetry Club by our good friend Michal Shapiro, proprietress of the excellent world music vlog InterMuse (if you haven't checked out this amazing online resource, don't wait - it's worth the trip!).
For those not familiar with Khaira Arby, the Malian singer has been blowing American audiences away for weeks now since she first hit these shores in August in support of her stellar international debut Timbuktu Tarab on Clermont Records. A native of northern Mali, Arby is a cousin of the legendary Ali Farka Toure, and puts a fierce, female spin on the Desert Blues sound that he pioneered.
Powered by a big voice and the twin guitar attack of M'Barka Dembelé and Abdramane Touré, Arby's live show is a knockout-see a little of it yourself below!
