King Sunny Adé has been a pivotal part of African music for a long time–he’s been creating popular music since in Nigeria since the 80s. And his first international CD release in 10 years (Bábá mo Tundé) is as eclectic and inspired as ever. It’s beats are rhythmic and colorful, infused with high energy African percussion and guitar. And Adé’s vocals are rich and bubbling as they work in and out of the bopping instrumentals.

What’s particularly interesting about Adé’s new album, released this September, is that includes two discs, with songs that are longer than your average three-minute tracks. In fact, one of Adé’s songs, Bábá mo Tundé (also the title of his album) stretches for an entire 31 minutes.

This album is beautiful and feels like easy-listening, although the lyrics sung by Adé are, according to Afropop Worldwide, not extremely lighthearted but particularly religious. Also according to Afropop Worldwide, Adé personally subtitles the album, “Songs of Spirituality, Hope and Redemption.”
