Winter in New York

Another Connecticut composer and musician continues his own holiday tradition this weekend when Grammy-winning saxophonist Paul Winter, who's new disc "Miho: Journey to the Mountain" is nominated for a "Best New Age" Grammy this year, presents his Winter Solstice Celebrations at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City Thursday, Dec. 16 through Saturday, Dec. 18. Winter will be performing selections from the disc as well as many of his classics in a performance that is a musical, theatrical, and environmental celebration.

The Litchfield-based performer's Living Music Records has had 15 Grammy nominations and seven wins in all. Now into his third decade of Solstice Celebrations at the Cathe-dral of St. John the Divine, Winter will be joined by Armenian vocalist Arto Tunçboyaciyan, Gospel singer Theresa Thomason, the Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, and The Paul Winter Consort, consisting of Paul Winter on soprano sax, Eugene Friesen on cello, Paul Sullivan on keyboards, Eliot Wadopian on bass, Bill Cahn on percussion, and Tim Brumfield on pipe organ.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Ticket prices range from $80 for reserved seats, to $50 and $35 for general admission. The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is located at Amsterdam Avenue and West 112th Street in New York City. For information, visit www.livingmusic.com.
