The Coolest Thing We Saw At WOMEX 2010

by Tom Pryor

Each Friday Nat Geo Music scours the far reaches of the internet to bring you the coolest new music videos from around the globe.

This week we journey to Yemen, via Israel, to bring you a video from Yemen Blues - who are hands down the coolest band we saw at this year's WOMEX World Music Expo in Copenhagen last week.

Led by the ridiculously charismatic singer Ravid Kahalani, the nine-piece ensemble combine traditional Yemenite melodies and instruments - including all sorts of percussion; even empty jerry cans! - with jazz, blues and funk to come up with a sound that's like nothing we've ever heard before - and that we're definitely looking forward to hearing again soon.

We met the band later, and scored a copy of their self-titled, independently-produced record; but we're not sure when or if it's coming out in the States any time soon (we sure hope so!).
