Yemen Blues

If you like music that transports you, Yemen Blues ought to do the trick, particularly when they perform in old-worldly Rodeph Shalom. Ravid Kahalani and his heritage of Yemeni Jewish chants are at the heart of the project. He's a young guy, but when he opens his mouth, centuries pour out and the visual contrast is stunning. The imagination of this nine-piece band is broad, including Latin and Middle Eastern percussion, cello and viola, flute, trombone and trumpet. There's an oud, of course, a natural part of any ensemble from that part of the world. And the gimbri — three goat-gut strings plucked over a goat-skin head — that's a bit more rarefied. 02/23/11 >> go there
