Biltz “The Ambassador” Bazawule, the silver-tongued rapper born in Ghana and based in Brooklyn, has at least one thing that nobody else in hip-hop today has: a killer, off-the-walls live show. In concert, West African guitar licks, boom-bap drum beats and the funkiest horn section since the JBs are topped off by Blitz’s smart rhymes, which are delivered with impeccable flow. After impressing audiences tired of the same-old, same-old with 2009’s defiant Stereotype, Blitz is back with a new, cameo-studded release: Native Sun. Conceived as a “journey backwards” through hip-hop to its African roots, the record features a broad pan-African musical palette and special guest voices from around the diaspora. This single, “Best I Can,” includes the gentle croon of Corneille, a German-Rwandan R&B star popular throughout French-speaking Africa. Native Sun has a visual component as well--a 20 minute short film directed by Terence Nance. Check out the preview below. 05/04/11 >> go there
