This Week In Hip-Hop
By W Jacarl Melton on May 3, 2011

Erin Barra
Tuesday:
>> There's nothing like gold old DJ battle. Nine DJs from the East Coast will squeeze three genres into 15-minute sets for cash and a chance to enter the national finals of the Red Bull "Thre3Style" competition. In addition to hearing from six of the DMV's best (along with one DJ each from Boston, Pittsburgh and New York City), Rich Medina will close out the night at U Street Music Hall with a set. Free with RSVP. 8 p.m.

>> Two Brooklyn emcees and labelmates, Talib Kweli and Jean Grae, take to the Black Cat's stage for a night that should be filled with great lyricism. $20 in advance / $25 at the door. 8 p.m.

>> Originally from Salt Lake City, Erin Barra combines electronic music production techniques with complex pop vocals to create the unique sound on display in her latest release, Illusions. She'll be taking part in the "Live" series at Ben's Next Door. Free. 9 p.m.

Thursday:
>> Blitz The Ambassador hails from Ghana, but now makes New York his home. The MC will make his way to Liv along with local duo, DTMD. $10 in advance / $15 at the door. 9 p.m.

Saturday:
>> Simply put, Louie Vega is a dance music legend. The Grammy-winning producer/DJ has been moving crowds for years as a solo act and as one-half of the Masters At Work. He'll be in D.C. performing at Liv with his wife, Anane. In addition, D.C.'s own Andrew Hogans and Sam Burns will be on hand to kick things off properly. $15 in advance / $20 at the door. 9 p.m.

Sunday:
>> Looking for a Mother's Day gift? Former Cooly's Hot Box vocalist Angela Johnson will be performing at Blues Alley in celebration of moms everywhere over the course of two shows. $25 +12.50 minimum/surcharge. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
