Robert Smith: "Small Hours" (John Martyn Cover)
By Nick Neyland

There’s a tribute album to folk-rock figurehead John Martyn due out in August, which features contributions from an eclectic array of artists, including Beck, Phil Collins, Vetiver and Beth Orton. The song tackled by Cure singer Robert Smith has leaked online, which is a reworking of Martyn’s “Small Hours” from his 1977 release One World. Like most Smith offerings his voice is instantly recognizable, but it works well with the melancholy hue of the original track, and there’s even a few Cure-like flanged guitar lines thrown in for good measure. The tribute album is titled Johnny Boy Would Love This, and will be issued on Aug. 16. 07/06/11 >> go there
