Genticorum - 'Nagez Rameurs'
Genticorum is an acoustic trio skilled in Francophone roots music from Quebec. The group’s French lyrics, indigenous subject matter and reverence for traditional Quebecois music shouldn’t put off music fans. This is evident on its latest album, “Nagez Rameurs,” a Hudson’s Bay Co. oarsman’s exhortation to “pull together, rowers!”
With virtuosic skill and tight execution, the three combine fiddle, wooden flute and guitar, all pushed by the traditional Quebecois “percussion” of feet dancing on a wooden board. Performances bounce between blinding speed and sweet gentility. All three sing lead, with the trio coming together for melancholy a cappella harmonies. Tunes sing of fur trapping, tall tales, log drivers, kitchen appliances and short skirts.
The sound is similar to Cajun, bluegrass and Celtic genres. The trio also adds humor, Scandinavian roots and pop touches to its reels, jigs, waltzes and anthems, sounding like a mash-up of Old Crow Medicine Show, Jethro Tull and BeauSoleil.
