Genticorum NAGEZ RAMEURS Roues et Archets RAO15 ***1/2
Interesting listening experience from the traditional supergroup from Quebec...This three-piece group are known for their energy and stage presence, whilst bringing the traditional music of their native land to the ears of thousands. Consisting of Pascal Gemme (fiddle, vocals), Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand (wooden flute, fretless bass, fiddle, vocals) and Yann Falquet (guitar, vocals) the group are vibrant and so multi-talented that their sound is full and exciting. While all of the songs are in French, and therefore the lyrical capacity of the songs is almost lost on me, the energy and explosive effect of their harmonies and vocal pace are mesmerising. Songs like Turlutte Hirsute is a wonderful example of the simple passion this band harness and their ability to move you with a fruitful pace. The title track Nagez Rameurs is slower and captivating, the harmonies again faultless, while the song is actually about the synchronisation of the rowers in a longboat, the title actually translating to: ‘Swim, Paddlers!’ Reel Circulaire is a resounding instrumental showcasing the talents of every member. The tune is actually dedicated to the high-speed flying train that connects the Lanaudiere region, known as the centre of the cosmos with the rest of the universe. Admittedly this record isn’t something I’d find myself listening to, but it has been an interesting listening experience and the liner notes have so much information, you return from the experience with some new knowledge and embracing some wayward ideas.
