It's Not Too Early to Start Thinking Sunfest!

While the calendar reminds us that it’s still winter in Western New York, there’s no reason we can start thinking about TD Sunfest ’11, “Canada’s premier celebration of world cultures,” held annually in nearby London, Ontario.

TD Sunfest is a must-attend event for thousands of music fans on both sides of the border. But this summer, from July 7-10, London’s acclaimed downtown arts festival set in beautiful Victoria Park is sure to be on even more GPS screens, thanks to its recent selection as a Top 100 North American destination for 2011 by The American Bus Association.

With its laid back, family friendly vibe and free admission, TD Sunfest remains one of the most culturally diverse events of its kind – each year attracting more than 225,000 patrons from as far away as Winnipeg and Chicago ... and Buffalo, of course! For four days, more than 35 professional ensembles representing nearly every continent on earth perform on two main stages at night and three satellite stages during the day.

Following are just a few of the guest artists already confirmed for TD Sunfest ’11:  Senegalese superstar Cheikh Lô; South African sensation Nomfusi & The Lucky Charms; from Niger, Etran Finatawa, a dynamic band of Wodaabe and Touareg nomads whose hypnotic musical groove evokes the breathless heat and shimmering horizon of the Sahara; Colombia’s Sexteto Tabala, “one of the finest exponents of Afro-Colombian/Caribbean culture”; from Spain, innovative Galician folk band Berrogueto; Havana, Cuba’s outstanding ambassadors, Sierra Maestra; and Rupa & the April Fishes, the trend-setting San Francisco band mixing chic French new wave with rousing Latin alternative grooves, energetic Gypsy swing and dreamy Indian ragas.

While global music and dance continue to be the highlight of Sunfest, the festival is also becoming popular for its incredible food and craft exhibitors from across Canada who offer everything from authentic African artifacts to mouth-watering Afghani cuisine. Over the course of a sun-drenched July weekend, visitors can truly eat and shop their way around the world!
