Watch John Averill talk about March Fourth’s new studio album + preview a track
by Tom D'Antoni on October 18, 2011

Word had gotten around that the March Fourth Marching Band, famous the world over for music, mayhem, fun, fire and stilts had brought in an outside producer for their new album, Magnificent Beast. Eyebrows went up all over town. The ultimate DIY band? The band who invented themselves and rode that invention to international fame? An outsider?

Well, when it’s Steve Berlin, that’s a different story. A member of Los Lobos for three decades with seven Grammy’s to his name, he has also produced albums for Faith No More, Dave Alvin, Tail Gators, Crash Test Dummies, Rickie Lee Jones, Michelle Shocked and many more.

When I interviewed him for a story on TapWater (he produced their new album), he said about the new March Fourth,  ”I’m real happy with it. I think it’s gong to amaze some people. I’m not sure exactly what the perception of them is, probably more of a good time than a great band. This record shows them to be a great band, really good songwriters. I think that’s something that’s lost in the pageantry of the shows.

I keep thinking to myself, trying to compare them to something, they don’t sound like anything else I’m aware of…completely unique set of songwriting and playing sensibility that’s really special.”

There won’t be an album release until they come back off the road in December when they’ll stage it at the Star Theater.
