Halloween in New Orleans is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. Like Mardi Gras, New Orleanians begin planning events, parades and costumes well in advance in order to properly go all out for this most formidable of holidays. Whether it’s an ominous haunted house or a friendly festival for kids, New Orleans takes Halloween to the next level. The following is the spectrum of Halloween festivities in New Orleans from which anyone can pick something they fear or fancy.

1. Haunted Houses – New Orleans is home to two of the most famous and terrifying Halloween-specific haunted houses (because we have plenty of other haunted establishments) in the world: The House of Shock and The Mortuary. This year, the House of Shock has expanded their operation into a full-fledged Halloween festival where spectators who don’t wish to brave the manifested nightmare can enjoy from a distance while visiting the bar and the Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in the outdoor area. The Mortuary – just as frightening – is located in a haunted house in Mid City on Canal Street. See the House of Shock and The Mortuary’s websites for hours and to purchase tickets.

2. Music – New Orleans rock and funk allstars, Galactic, continue their Halloween Night tradition with a concert at the Howlin Wolf. Throwing down with Galactic are southern rockers JJ Grey & Mofro. A stellar and reasonably priced VIP package can be purchased online while still available. Also on Halloween night, a musical whirlwind will blow through the House of Blues called MarchFourth. M4 for short is a marching band complete with their own instrumental sections and unique style. And of course, the Voodoo Music Experience dominates the weekend leading up to Halloween.

3. For Kids – In New Orleans, it can be easily forgotten that Halloween is just as much for kids – if not more – as it is for adults. Luckily, there are great Halloween events for kids, like Boo at the Zoo and the Children’s Museum’s Spooky Saturday and Museum Mash. Boo at the Zoo is the ultimate Halloween playground for kids at the Audubon Zoo. There are rides, haunted houses, trick or treat houses, games, music and candy galore. Tickets and details can be found on the Audubon Zoo website. The Louisiana Children’s Museum’s Spooky Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is an arts and crafts fun-shop of goo-making lessons, trick-or-treat bag decoration and spider bracelet designing. Later, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. is the Museum Mash featuring trick or treating through museum exhibits and a Halloween dance party in the Atrium.

4. Special Events – Boo Carre is an all day long Halloween festival on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Throughout the French Market district of the French Quarter, there will be trick or treating from noon to 4 p.m.; live music including the At Close Distance teenage rock band, Egg Yolk Jubilee and Pot Luck String Band; Halloween-themed food and beverage; live theater; pumpkin carving and closing out with the Pumpkin Procession at Dusk ending at Jackson Square with the lighting of the pumpkins. Then at 6:30 p.m. on Halloween Night is the Molly’s at the Market annual Halloween Parade. The walking parade features firetrucks and some small floats but mainly just costumed folks roaming through the Quarter, drinks in hand.

5. Frenchmen – Frenchmen Street on Halloween is where the party’s at. Perhaps the funnest and wildest Halloween multi-block party, this is the place to see and be seen in your best costume attire. Anything can happen on Frenchmen Street during Halloween: the most flamboyant and shocking costumes, stilt walkers, fire eaters, drum circles and lots and lots of libations. This is one R- Rated party.
