New York's annual world music showcase, globalFEST - now in its ninth year - recently announced its lineup for 2012.
This year's event will boast twelve acts from around the globe, including Brazilian television star and samba singer Diogo Nogueira, Malian "folk-rap" trio SMOD, and Israel's scorching Yemen Blues.
This year's globalFEST lineup will also include three U.S. debuts: Irish-American roots supergroup The Gloaming, Chinese jaw harp master Wang Li, and Malian folk-rappers SMOD. See complete list of performers below.
globalFest 2012 will be held on January 8, 2012 in New York City's venerable Webster Hall. For more information including ticketing, venue directions and showtimes, consult the official globalFEST website.
In addition, globalFEST is also launching a touring fund, with support from the Ford Foundation. According to the festival website, the fund "would support festival alums on U.S. tours, as well as create a new program to reimburse festival performers for expenses related to their globalFEST appearances. This, added to ongoing support from founding sponsor, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, will strengthen the festival's ability to find uncommonly good, often unheard sounds and bring them to the States". globalFEST has initiated a Kickstarter Campagin to help sustain the new touring fund.
