JOSHUA LIGHT SHOW Back in the 1960s, before computer video, Joshua White’s Joshua Light Show defined East Coast psychedelic visuals with its pulsating liquid blobs and splashes; he was in residence at New York City’s Fillmore East and also worked the 1969 Woodstock Festival. The Joshua Light Show returns to downtown Manhattan for four nights at New York University’s Skirball Center, providing the backdrop for four concerts. Thursday brings the duos of the minimalist composer and raga singer Terry Riley and his son Gyan Riley, and of the electric harpist Zeena Parkins and the percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Friday has noisy improvisations by Lou Reed on guitar, John Zorn on alto saxophone, Bill Laswell on bass and Milford Graves on drums. The songwriters of MGMT, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, perform Saturday, and Sept. 16 brings world music via Globalfest: Ethiopian funk from Debo Band and Brazilian forro from Forro in the Dark. Sept. 13-16; 7:30 and 10 p.m., Skirball Center. (J. P.)
09/07/12 >> go there
