Gigi, ``Illuminated Audio'' (Palm Pictures, in stores Tuesday) -- Being married to a renowned producer does have its benefits. Ethiopian songstress Gigi has work from her self-titled 2001 debut remixed and ``reconstructed'' here by husband and studio master Bill Laswell -- famous for his spacey takes on Miles Davis, Bob Marley and Carlos Santana. Laswell succeeds in doing what he does best, adding layers of ambience and depth to the original recordings.
The pace is relaxed, the instrumentals ponderous, the journey mystical. The only thing missing is Gigi herself -- her voice has nearly disappeared from the final result, visiting only on occasion to remind us for whom this dreamy castle-in-the-sky was built in the first place. There's some cool ambient tripster stuff here, but fans of Gigi will have to wait until her next album for the real deal.
