Gigi's self- titled previous CD rated as the world fusion gem of 2001. Producer Bill Laswell surrounded the Ethiopian pop singer's smokey voice with a swirling mist conjured by jazz stars Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Henry Threadgill and Pharoah Sanders.
Now Laswell has created a "reproduction and mix translation" of the same set. The point of this bland exercise is unfathomable, unless Bannana Republic hired him to deliver world wallpaper music. Everything wonderful about the original CD is missing, including Gigi's vocals. Her name on the cover qualifies as false advertising.
For the real Gigi and real Ethio-pop, don't miss a rare chance to see her live instead. -Larry Katz 04/18/03
