Sagapool blends musical skills, shenanigans

The six-piece band Sagapool of Canada will bring its high-energy show to Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on April 4 and Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on April 5.

CARTHAGE — New England Celtic Arts will present Sagapool, Canada's highly acclaimed world music band, Wednesday, April 4, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center.

The six-piece band, which has gone from Balkan and gypsy-inflected impromptu shows on the summer streets of Old Montreal to crafting acoustic original instrumentals, will also perform Thursday, April 5, at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity.

With Sagapool known for its high energy, it comes as no surprise when the guitarist jumps up to join the bassist for a thumping four-handed riff.

More recently, the ensemble has turned inward, adding a gentle reflection to its mix. "We’re known for our energetic pieces, when people switch instruments — we all can play all the instruments involved. And we keep that energy, even if our music feels more introspective," said clarinetist and co-founder Guillaume Bourque. “I think the result is really well balanced."

This mix of good-natured shenanigans, musical skill and thoughtfulness earned Sagapool Canadian Folk Music's award for best instrumental album in 2008; and gained the band showcases at major music events such as WOMEX in 2010.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Skye, 7:30 p.m. in Unity. Preshow jam sessions are slated at both venues one hour prior to curtain. For tickets, $15 at the door, call Skye at 562-4445 or UCCPA at 948-7469. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive; UCCPA is at 42 Depot St., Unity. 03/28/12 >> go there
