Imani Uzuri: The Gypsy Diaries (Her Holy Water) File Under: Folk

Uzuri was featured about a decade ago on a compilation for Giant Step that introduced us to a rich and talented group including Donnie, N’Dambi, and Jiva as well as several artists with success in previous decades (Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, and Jody Watley)

Her new set is a celebration of her extremely talented and emotive vocals overlaid on sounds tied to other continents (sitars and Japaense folk flutes). It would sound equally as affecting if it were being performed on a Broadway stage, which serves to prove the point of her affecting vocals. They’re powerful and connected to a deeper spiritual experience.
