Stick Against Stone Orchestra (SASO) fut un collectif-culte et éphémère à Pittsburgh au début des années 1980. Le groupe avait une oreille pour tout, des tambours africains à Ornette Coleman. Pour le célébrer, le cinéaste Will Kreth a eu la bonne idée de créer un nouveau SASO qui interprète son répertoire qui n’a pas vieilli. Est-ce un hybride de funk ou de punk ? Les deux sont vrais. Avec un esprit de liberté au sein duquel l’expérimentation se fond dans la danse. On démarre avec une pièce très rythmée avec des cuivres minimalistes. L’urgence du punk et le free jazz ne sont pas loin. On enchaîne avec des percussions tribales aux timbres contrastés, avant de plonger dans un reggae roots atmosphérique et du ska funk avec solo de saxo jazz. Stick Against stone was a short lived cult-collective in Pittsburgh in the beginning of the 1980’s. The group had an ear for all types of music, from African drums to Ornette Coleman. To celebrate them, filmmaker Will Kreth had the brilliant idea to create a new SASO, interpreting their repertoire. Is it a hybrid of funk or punk? Both are correct. With a free spirit, they experimented with dance. They started with one very rhythmic piece with a minimalist brass section. The urge for punk and free jazz weren’t far. They then added on tribal percussionists playing contrasting timbres, before diving into reggae roots, ska funk, and solo saxophone jazz. The music would then become faster and more energetic, and then bounce back into the sound of drums in a slowed-down afrobeat. One explores all sorts of atmospheres around funk. It’s enticing!
