The November 11th Benefit Concert + Jam marks the inaugural event for Guitar Mash, a series of live events and online collaborations bringing together guitarists and music lovers around the block and around the world. The mass jam will be led by musical director, Mark Stewart (Paul Simon), a band of New York’s finest session players, as well as a selection of special guest guitarists in rock, blues and roots music. Participating artists will include Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Tom Colicchio (Top Chef, Craft Restaurants). Event Features: Benefit Concert + Jam The event is open to guitar players, enthusiasts, collectors and their families (ages 11 and up*). Guitarists will have access to the lyrics and chords online prior to the event. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to pay-to-play a selection of “Great Guitars”, made possible by Sam Ash Music. Silent Auction Featuring autographed instruments and guitar paraphernalia. Brunch and Bloodys – soft drinks too! *Note: This event is for ages 11 and up. Children 10 and under are welcome to enjoy art, music and pizza at Church Street School throughout the hours of the event. A portion of the proceeds from the concert + jam at City Winery will underwrite scholarships for Rock the House, the school’s signature band program ofChurch Street School for Music and Art. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Mark Stewart, Guitar Mash Musical Director Multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and instrument designer Mark Stewart has been heard around the world performing old and new music. Going to conservatory to study both guitar and cello, he came to NYC to work as a performer on both instruments, but was ultimately drawn most to the electric guitar. Today Mark plays regularly with a wide range of musicians: since 1998 he has recorded, toured and been Musical Director with Paul Simon. A founding member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Mark is also a member of Steve Reich & Musicians and the comic duo Polygraph Lounge and has performed with Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bobby McFerrin, Bette Midler, Paul McCartney, Joan Baez, David Byrne, and James Taylor. He is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and his New York Lower East Side "lab" is home to an instrument workshop and sonic salon where traditional and new instruments co-habitate. Chad Smith, Guitar Mash Artist Chair Smith's musical chops are no secret - the six-time Grammy Award winning drummer behind the legendary funk rock band, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, is also a guitar shredder by night. In April of 2012, Smith was inducted with The Red Hot Chili Peppers into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tom Colicchio, Guitar Mash Co-Chair One of the culinary world's most celebrated figures, chef and owner of Craft Restaurants and head judge of Bravo's Top Chef, Colicchio is a closet guitar player with a collection ranging from a 1932 Gibson L-1 to newer guitars by Froggy Bottom.
